बृहदीश्वर मंदिर / Brihadishwar Temple
बृहदीश्वर मंदिर तमिलनाडु के तंजौर में स्थित एक हिंदू मंदिर है जो 11 वीं सदी के आरंभ में बनाया गया था। इसे तमिल भाषा में बृहदीश्वर के नाम से जाना जाता है। बृहदेश्वर मंदिर पूरी तरह से ग्रेनाइट निर्मित है। विश्व में यह अपनी तरह का पहला और एकमात्र मंदिर है जो कि ग्रेनाइट का बना हुआ है। यह अपनी भव्यता, वास्तुशिल्प और केंद्रीय गुम्बद से लोगों को आकर्षित करता है। इस मंदिर को यूनेस्को ने विश्व धरोहर स्थल घोषित किया है।

इतिहास
बृहदीश्वर मंदिर का निर्माण 1003-1010 ई. के बीच चोल शासक प्रथम राजाराज चोल ने करवाया था। उनके नाम पर इसे राजराजेश्वर मन्दिर का नाम भी दिया जाता है। राजाराजा प्रथम भगवान शिव के परम भक्त थे जिस कारण उन्होंने अनेक शिव मंदिरों का निर्माण करवाया था जिनमें से एक बृहदीश्वर मंदिर भी है। कहा जाता हैं राजराज चोला ने इस मंदिर का निर्माण अपने साम्राज्य को इश्वर का आशीर्वाद दिलाने के लिए बनवाया था। यह विशाल मंदिर अपने समय की विशालतम संरचनाओं में गिना जाता था। इसके तेरह (13) मंजिलें भवन की ऊंचाई लगभग 66 मीटर है। मंदिर भगवान शिव की आराधना को समर्पित है।
स्थापत्य कला
यह कला की प्रत्येक शाखा - वास्तुकला, पाषाण व ताम्र में शिल्पांकन, प्रतिमा विज्ञान, चित्रांकन, नृत्य, संगीत, आभूषण एवं उत्कीर्णकला का भंडार है।बृहदीश्वर मंदिर उत्कीर्ण संस्कृत व तमिल पुरालेख सुलेखों का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। इस मंदिर के निर्माण कला की एक विशेषता यह है कि इसके गुंबद की परछाई पृथ्वी पर नहीं पड़ती। शिखर पर स्वर्णकलश स्थित है। जिस पाषाण पर यह कलश स्थित है, अनुमानत: उसका भार 2200 मन (80 टन) है और यह एक ही पाषाण से बना है। मंदिर में स्थापित विशाल, भव्य शिवलिंग को देखने पर उनका वृहदेश्वर नाम सर्वथा उपयुक्त प्रतीत होता है।

बृहदीश्वर मंदिर ग्रेनाइट से निर्मित है और अधिकांशत: पत्थर के बड़े खण्ड इसमें इस्तेमाल किए गए हैं, ये शिलाखण्ड आस पास उपलब्ध नहीं है इसलिए इन्हें किसी दूर के स्थान से लाया गया था। यह मंदिर एक फैले हुए अंदरुनी प्रकार में बनाया गया है जो 240.90 मीटर लम्बा (पूर्व – पश्चिम) और 122 मीटर चौड़ा (उत्तर – दक्षिण) है और इसमें पूर्व दिशा में गोपुरम के साथ अन्य तीन साधारण तोरण प्रवेश द्वार प्रत्येक पार्श्व पर और तीसरा पिछले सिरे पर है। प्रकार के चारों ओर परिवारालय के साथ दो मंजिला मालिका है।
मंदिर में प्रवेश करने पर गोपुरम् के भीतर एक चौकोर मंडप है। वहां चबूतरे पर नन्दी जी विराजमान हैं। नन्दी जी की यह प्रतिमा 6 मीटर लंबी, 2.6 मीटर चौड़ी तथा 3.7 मीटर ऊंची है। भारतवर्ष में एक ही पत्थर से निर्मित नन्दी जी की यह दूसरी सर्वाधिक विशाल प्रतिमा है।

बृहदीश्वर मंदिर चेन्नई के दक्षिण-पश्चिम में लगभग 350 किलोमीटर (220 मील) दूरी पर तंजौर शहर में स्थित है। यह शहर भारतीय रेलवे, तमिलनाडु बस सेवाओं और राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग 67, 45 सी, 226 और 226 एक्स्टर्न के नेटवर्क द्वारा अन्य प्रमुख शहरों से प्रतिदिन जुड़ा हुआ है। नियमित सेवाओं के साथ निकटतम हवाई अड्डा तिरुचिरापल्ली अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डा (IATA: TRZ) है, जो लगभग 55 किलोमीटर (34 मील) दूर है।

शासन प्रबंध
वर्तमान में मंदिर का प्रबंधन तंजौर मराठा शाही परिवार के प्रमुख बाबाजी भोसले द्वारा किया जाता है। वह महल देवस्थानम के वंशानुगत ट्रस्टी के रूप में कार्य करते है जो बृहदेश्वर मंदिर सहित 88 चोल मंदिरों का प्रबंधन जारी रखता है। तमिल समूह इन अधिकारों को रद्द करने के लिए तमिलनाडु सरकार से असफल याचिका दायर कर रहे हैं क्योंकि वह चोल या तमिल वंश का नहीं है। प्रदर्शनकारियों में से एक के अनुसार, बाबाजी भोसले भी तंजौर के मराठा राजाओं के कानूनी उत्तराधिकारी नहीं हैं।

Brihadishwar Temple
Brihadisvara Temple is a Hindu temple located in Tanjore in Tamil Nadu which was built in the early 11th century. It is known as Brihadisvara in Tamil language. The Brihadisvara Temple is completely built of granite. It is the first and only temple of its kind in the world made of granite. It attracts people from its grandeur, architecture and central dome. This temple has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History
Brihadisvara Temple was built by the first Chola ruler Rajaraja Chola between 1003-1010 AD. It is also named after him as Rajarajeshwar temple. Rajaraja was the first devotee of Lord Shiva, due to which he built many Shiva temples, one of which is the Brihadeeswarar Temple. It is said that Rajaraja Chola built this temple to bless his kingdom with the blessings of God. This huge temple was counted among the largest structures of its time. Its thirteen (13) storeys are about 66 meters in height. The temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva.
Architecture
It is a repository of art branch, sculpture, iconography, painting, dance, music, jewelery and engraving in every branch of art - architecture, stone and copper. Brihadisvara Temple is an excellent example of engraved Sanskrit and Tamil archive calligraphy. A feature of the construction art of this temple is that the shadow of its dome does not fall on the earth. Swarnakalash is situated on the summit. The stone on which this urn is located is estimated to have a weight of 2200 mana (80 tons) and is made of a single stone. On seeing the huge, magnificent Shivalinga installed in the temple, his name Brihadeeswarar seems to be suitable.

Brihadisvara Temple is built of granite and is mostly used in large stone blocks, this stone is not available nearby so they were brought from a distant place. The temple is built in a sprawling interior that is 240.90 meters long (east-west) and 122 meters wide (north-south) and has three other simple archways with gopurams on each side and the third at the rear. Is on the tip. The type has a two-storey garden with a family room around it.
On entering the temple there is a square pavilion inside the gopuram. Nandi is sitting on the platform there. This statue of Nandi is 6 meters long, 2.6 meters wide and 3.7 meters high. This is the second largest statue of Nandi, built in India with the same stone.

Location
Brihadisvara Temple is located in the city of Tanjore, about 350 kilometers (220 mi) southwest of Chennai. The city is connected daily to other major cities by a network of Indian Railways, Tamil Nadu bus services and National Highways 67, 45C, 226 and 226 externs. The nearest airport with regular services is Tiruchirappalli International Airport (IATA: TRZ), which is about 55 kilometers (34 mi) away.

Administration
The temple is currently managed by Babaji Bhosle, the head of the Tanjore Maratha royal family. He serves as the hereditary trustee of the palace Devasthanam which continues to manage 88 Chola temples including the Brihadeeswarar Temple. Tamil groups are unsuccessfully petitioning the Tamil Nadu government to revoke these rights as they are not of Chola or Tamil descent. According to one of the protesters, Babaji Bhosale is also not the legal heir of the Maratha kings of Tanjore.
