     केशव मंदिर कर्नाटक के मैसूर जिले के सोमनाथपुर शहर में स्थित है। बंगलुरू से 139 कि.मी और मैसूर से 35 कि.मी की दूरी पर स्थित सोमनाथपुर कर्नाटक के प्रसिद्ध पर्यटन स्थल है, जो अपने सांस्कृतिक और ऐतिहासिक महत्व के लिए काफी ज्यादा प्रसिद्ध है।

   सोमनाथपुर का सबसे मुख्य आकर्षण यहां स्थित केशव मंदिर है, कर्नाटक के प्रसिद्ध पर्यटन स्थल हैं, जो होयसाळ वास्तुकला के तीन सबसे प्रसिद्ध और बेहतरीन प्रस्तुतियों में से एक माना जाता है। मंदिर की भव्यता देखने के लिए देश-विदेश से पर्यटकों का यहां आगमन होता है। यह मंदिर चेन्नाकेशव मंदिर के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह एक प्राचीव वैष्णव मंदिर है, जो यहां कावेरी नदी के तट पर स्थित है। इस मंदिर का निर्माण 1268 में राजा नरसिम्हा तृतीय के सेनापति सोमनाथ द्वारा किया गया था।

    सोमनाथपुर में केशव मंदिर होयसाळ वंश का एक और शानदार स्मारक है। यह एक लुभावनी सुंदर त्रिकुटा मंदिर है जो भगवान कृष्ण को तीन रूपों में समर्पित है - जनार्दन, केशव और वेणुगोपाल। दुर्भाग्य से, मुख्य केशव मूर्ति गायब है, और जनार्दन और वेणुगोपाला की मूर्तियाँ क्षतिग्रस्त हैं। फिर भी यह मंदिर कलात्मकता में डूबने और मूर्तिकारों की सरासर प्रतिभा को देखने लायक है, जिन्होंने इस भव्य स्मारक को दिव्य बनाया।

चेन्नाकेशव मंदिर का इतिहास

    सोमनाथपुर स्थित चेन्नाकेशव मंदिर का निर्माण होयसाळ वंश के एक सेनापति सोमनाथ ने करवाया था। इस सेनापति ने अपने नाम पर यहाँ एक छोटा सा शहर बसाया था - सोमनाथपुर। स्पष्ट रूप से अपने अधिपति, होयसल राजा नरसिम्हा तृतीय के पक्ष का आनंद लेते हुए, उन्होंने राजा से अनुमति और संसाधनों के साथ भव्य मंदिर के निर्माण की परियोजना शुरू करने की पहल की और राजा के आशीर्वाद से निर्माण शुरू किया गया था।

    मंदिर का निर्माण 1268 ईसा में पूरा हुआ और संरक्षित किया गया। मंदिर में एक पत्थर की पटिया पर एक पुराना कन्नड़ शिलालेख है जो इन सभी विवरणों की पुष्टि करता है।

वास्तुकला

    केशव मंदिर एक बाहरी प्रदक्षिणा मार्ग के साथ एक उभरे हुए मंच पर बनाया गया है। मंदिर में तीन तीर्थ और विमन के साथ एक तारकीय योजना है। दीवारों को महाकाव्यों, हाथियों की आकृतियों और युद्ध के दृश्यों से लेकर कावड़ियों को दिखाने के खूबसूरत नजारों में समेटा गया है। इसके ऊपर का खंड विभिन्न देवताओं की नक्काशी से आच्छादित है।

दक्षिण तीर्थ

      उत्तर प्रवेश द्वार में भी दो द्वारपाल हैं: भद्रा और सुभद्रा। प्रवेश द्वार के ऊपर का सरदल जनार्दन को दर्शाता है जबकि चंदवा फिर से लक्ष्मीनारायण को दिखाता है। गर्भगृह में ६ फीट ऊंची प्रतिमा है, जिसमें गरुड़ की प्रतिमा १.५ फीट की है, और जनार्दन की छवि ४.५ फीट ऊंची है। वह गहने पहने हुए है, और अपनी छवि के तोरण पर फिर से विष्णु के दस अवतारों को उकेरा गया है।

पश्चिम तीर्थ

    पश्चिम मंदिर का प्रवेश द्वार आकार और सम्मिलित विशेषताओं में दक्षिणी गर्भगृह के समान है। प्रवेश द्वार के ऊपर सरदल एक खड़े केशव को दर्शाता है जबकि चंदवा गजलक्ष्मी को दर्शाता है। सुखनसी को विगत कर देते हैं, लिंटेल अनंत वैशा पर बैठा एक वैकुंठ नारायण दिखाता है और चंदवा सुखासन योग मुद्रा में एक विष्णु को दर्शाता है। गर्भगृह में एक गरुड़ पीठ है जो १.५ फीट लंबा है लेकिन प्रतिमा गायब है।

तथ्य

   Keshava Temple is located in the Somnathpur town of Mysore district, Karnataka.  Located 139 km from Bangalore and 35 km from Mysore, Somnathpur is a famous tourist destination in Karnataka, which is very famous for its cultural and historical significance.

  The main attraction of Somnathpur is the Keshava Temple located here, the famous tourist destination of Karnataka, which is considered to be one of the three most famous and finest productions of Hoysala architecture.  Tourists from India and abroad come here to see the grandeur of the temple.  This temple is also known as Chennakeshava Temple.  It is a Prachaiv Vaishnava temple, which is situated here on the banks of the river Kaveri.  This temple was built in 1268 by Somnath, the commander of King Narasimha III.

   The Keshava Temple at Somnathpur is another magnificent monument of the Hoysa dynasty.  It is a breathtakingly beautiful Trikuta temple dedicated to Lord Krishna in three forms - Janardhana, Keshav and Venugopal.  Unfortunately, the main Keshava idol is missing, and the idols of Janardhana and Venugopala are damaged.  Nevertheless, this temple is worth sinking into the artistry and the sheer brilliance of the sculptors who made this grand monument divine.

History of Chennakeshava Temple

   The Chennakeshava temple at Somnathpur was built by Somnath, a commander of the Hoysa dynasty.  This commander had established a small town in his name - Somnathpur.  Apparently enjoying the favor of his suzerain, Hoysala king Narasimha III, he took the initiative to start the construction of the grand temple with permission and resources from the king and construction was started with the king's blessing.

     The construction of the Keshava Temple was completed and preserved in 1268 AD.  The temple has an old Kannada inscription on a stone slab that confirms all these details.

Architecture of Keshav Temple

   The Keshava temple is built on a raised platform with an outer pradakshina passage.  The temple has a stellar plan with three shrines and vimanas.  The walls are covered in beautiful scenes ranging from epics, elephant figures and battle scenes to Kavadis.  The section above it is covered with carvings of various deities.

   The stellar scheme creates several corners and niches that provide different tents for the sculptor and each line carries a different pattern.  The exquisite carving is like a jeweler's work.  The ceilings also make beautiful decorations.  This temple has three temples with three vimans, so it is Trikuta temple.

 South shrine

     There are two gatekeepers at the south shrine entrance: Bhadra and Subhadra.  The lint above the entrance shows Venugopal.  The 13th-century Lakshminarayan carving is depicted in the Sukhasana Yoga posture, which consists of chakra, conch, lotus and mace.  The south sanctum sanctorum is 8'x8 'feet square, but the wall is covered with planks for more space.  The image of Krishna in the sanctum sanctorum is 4.5 feet high.  His head is slightly tilted as he is playing the flute with both his hands.  His fingers are in a tapping position, and all creatures - from humans to cows, the gods are depicted inside the sanctum sanctorum as embodied in divine music.  Above the image arch, ten incarnations of Vishnu are engraved: Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vaman, Parashurama, Rama, Balarama, Buddha and Kalki.

 North shrine

       The north entrance also has two gatekeepers: Bhadra and Subhadra.  The lintel above the entrance shows Janardana while the canopy again shows Laxminarayan.  The sanctum sanctorum has a statue of 8 feet high, of which the statue of Garuda is 1.5 feet, and the image of Janardhana is 7.5 feet high.  He is wearing jewels, and at the archway of his image, ten incarnations of Vishnu are engraved again.

 West shrine

     The entrance of the Western Temple is similar to the Dakshin Sanbhagriha in shape and features.  The lintel above the entrance shows a standing Keshava while the canopy represents Gajalakshmi.  Sukhanasi is put to death, the lintel shows a Vaikuntha Narayana seated on the Anant Vaisha and the canopy represents a Vishnu in the Sukhasana Yoga posture.  The sanctum has a Garuda Peetha which is 1.5 feet tall but the statue is missing.

Other Facts

   This Hoysala temple is amazingly beautiful.  Unfortunately, the Keshava Temple is no longer used as a place of worship because the idols here have been broken and the temple was deserted by the invading armies of the Muslim Sultanate.  But the beautiful temple still attracts visitors and reminds people of the magnificent artistic and engineering achievements of the era.

    Somnathpur is 38 km from Mysore.  You can get bus service to Somanathapura from Mysore and Srirangapatna.  Somnathpura also has a railway station.  You can visit this temple throughout the year, as there is no special time to visit it.
